The first thing that sticks out this weekend are drivers that have dominated on 1.5 mile long racetracks. Texas will be the third 1.5 mile long track of the season which includes the Atlanta & Las Vegas speedways, both won by Kevin Harvick. Oddly enough, the last time they raced in the Texas in November, Harvick was the winner. Add in seven straight top-10 finishes at this track, Harvick will definitely be a contender this weekend.

The other driver who should be the favorite this weekend is Martin Truex Jr. The #78 car doesn’t have a career win in Texas, but does have 7 wins in the past two seasons on tracks similar to Texas. Truex has been so dominate on 1.5 mile long tracks the past two years, he’s finished 8th or better in 14 of the last 15 races. While those two should be the favorites in Vegas, I’ll give you some other names that could get to victory lane on Sunday.

Another driver who’s been competitive in 2018 is Chase Elliott. Elliott is in his third season of the Cup Series for Hendricks Motorsport and has been fairly good at Texas. In the four career races, he’s finished all four times in the top-10. While Jimmie Johnson does have seven career wins at Texas for Team Hendricks, it’s been Elliott who had the best shot at a win through six races in 2018. Johnson should be considered a favorite this week, but his recent struggles in 2018 doesn’t give me confidence his results will change.

Some longshots to consider this week include Alex Bowman, Erik Jones and Ryan Blaney. While none of them will be considered favorites, all three drivers have shown they have the speed to stay up front.Start your engines! NASCAR is speeding back into the Texas Motor Speedway in north Fort Worth this weekend for the O’Reilly Auto Parts 500. Thousands of race fans will be packing into the area to catch the big race on Sunday.

The speedway’s gates actually open at 11:00 a.m. on Friday. The days leading up to the race will be all about the fan experience and qualifiers. NASCAR fans arrive early to check out their favorite drivers, see them hit the pavement, and soak in everything that TMS has to offer.

David Starr is a long-time NASCAR racer and North Texas resident. He’s excited to be home. “It’s awesome being back here at the Texas Motor Speedway, especially having my kids and my wife here with me at the race track,” he said Friday. “We race all over the country every week, and daddy’s gone four or five days out of the week.”
